The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades takes its name from Al Aqsa Mosque on the holy site in Jerusalem known as Noble Sanctuary to Muslims and Temple Mount to Jews. The name also refers to the Palestinian intifada that began in September 2000 after Likud Party leader Ariel Sharon visited the site.
