LJ was formed in 1996 by Muhammad Ajmal (also known as Akram Lahori), Malik Ishaq and Riaz Basra as the armed offshoot of the Sunni Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) sectarian group (see separate record). SSP was founded in the 1980s by Maulan Haq Nawaz Jhangvi, who was killed in 1990, with the goal of establishing a Sunni theocracy in Pakistan.
