The 155-mm M114 howitzer was originally built as the M1 in World War II and redesignated M114 after the war. The M114 designation covers the M1 or M1A1 howitzer, recoil mechanism (M6), and its carriage (M1A1). It was the U.S. Army and Marine Corps' principal 155-mm howitzer until the introduction o f the M198 in the early 1980s. It was exported to many other countries as well.
