The Gila is a South African mine-protected armored personnel carrier (APC) aimed at both the domestic and export markets. South Africa's military forces are increasingly being deployed for peacekeeping-type missions. The Gila name was chosen because it evokes the tough, desert-dwelling lizard of northern Mexico and parts of the southwest U.S. It is also a Zulu word meaning "to trap."
