OVERVIEW Guinea-Bissau, a former colony of Portugal, is bordered to the north by Senegal, to the south and east by Guinea and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Guinea-Bissau gained independence in September of 1974 after fighting an 11-year war with Portugal.
