OVERVIEW Mozambique is a former Portuguese colony on the southeastern coast of Africa. It became independent in 1975 after a protracted guerilla war led by FRELIMO (Mozambique Liberation Front). The former "liberation movement" has ruled since then as a political party with the same name. A 16-year civil war that raged between the ruling Marxist FRELIMO party and the opposition group RENAMO (Mozambique National Resistance) ended in 1992. RENAMO was supported by Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe)...
