OVERVIEW The People's Republic of Bangladesh is bordered on the north, west and east by India, southeast by Burma, and south by the Bay of Bengal (Indian Ocean). Between 1947 and 1971, Bangladesh formed part of Pakistan and was known as East Pakistan. The regions, flanking India, were separated by about 1,000 miles (1,600 km).
