OVERVIEW The Indian coast guard began operations in February 1977 as part of the navy. In August 1978, it became an independent paramilitary service under the Ministry of Defense. Operational funds are supplied by the Dept. of Revenue. In April 1982, the Customs Marine was merged with the coast guard. The coast guard is responsible for a number of functions, including anti-smuggling, maritime search and rescue, anti-pollution and enforcement of the 200-nm exclusive economic zone (EEZ)....
