OVERVIEW Armenia is a mountainous, land-locked republic located in the mid-Transcaucasus region. Formerly part of the Soviet Union, Armenia declared independence in September of 1991. It is bordered to the north by Georgia, to the east by Azerbaijan, to the west by Turkey and to the south by Iran.
