OVERVIEW The Republic of Kazakhstan is bordered to the north by Russia, to the south by Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, to the east by China and to the west by the Caspian Sea. The absence of a strong external military threat since independence from the Soviet Union in December 1991 has allowed Kazakhstan to expand its military ties with the West.
