OVERVIEW Located in North Africa, Libya is bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, east by Sudan and Egypt, south by Chad and Niger and west by Algeria and Tunisia. The kingdom became an independent monarchy in 1951. The previous politico-military structure was not assumed until the overthrow of the monarchy by Col. Muammar Qaddafi in 1969.
