OVERVIEW Unclassified details on the organization of Yemen's navy remain unavailable. In early 2010, reports emerged that the Yemeni navy was charging commercial ships fees of up to US$55,000 each to escape pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden. According to the Australian newspaper, the arrangements were made without the government's knowledge or approval. PERSONNEL STRENGTH Approximately 1,700 personnel served in the pre-war navy; another 1,200 were in the coast guard.
