OVERVIEW The Republic of Macedonia declared its independence from Yugoslavia on Sept. 8, 1991. The subsequent withdrawal of Yugoslav army units and equipment left Macedonia nearly devoid of defensive capability. Stemming largely from historical concerns by the Greek government over Macedonia's name, the nation is sometimes referred to internationally as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
