OVERVIEW Luxembourg is the smallest member of NATO in terms of land area and the second smallest in population (about 585,700 in September 2017). Among alliance members, only Iceland's population is smaller. It borders France to the south (73 km/45 miles); Germany to the east (138 km/86 miles); and Belgium to the west (148 km/92 miles).
