OVERVIEW Formerly a British colony known as the Gold Coast, Ghana in 1957 was the first nation in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from colonial rule. Ghana is bordered on the north and northwest by Burkina Faso, on the east by Togo, on the west by Ivory Coast and to the south by the Gulf of Guinea.
