OVERVIEW The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) operates in the Gulf of Oman, Strait of Hormuz, Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf. Iran's acquisition of three KILO-class submarines from Russia between 1993 and 1997 accelerated Oman's acquisition of anti-submarine warfare-capable vessels and systems. The Omani navy's primary responsibilities are to protect and defend the nearly 2,000 miles of the sultanate's coastline and offshore economic zones, as well as assisting in search-and-rescue operations....
