Bosnia-Herzegovina Overview
OVERVIEW The 1991 declaration of sovereignty by Bosnia and Herzegovina was followed by an independence referendum in the former Yugoslavia in 1992. The Serbian population within Bosnia -- supported by the Serbian government in Belgrade -- responded with an armed rebellion aimed at dividing the republic along ethnic lines and joining Serb-held areas to form a "greater Serbia."
