OVERVIEW The Republic of Singapore is an island nation located at a narrow point of the Strait of Malacca off the extreme southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Connected with Malaysia by a 1,056-meter (3,465-foot) causeway spanning the Johore Strait (1,207 meters; 3,960 feet wide), Singapore's land area -- about 3.5 times that of Washington, D.C. -- is about 719 square kilometers (277 sq miles), consisting of one main island and 58 islets.
