OVERVIEW El Salvador, the smallest nation in Central America, is bordered to the west by Guatemala and to the north and east by Honduras. The Pacific Ocean borders the country to the south. El Salvador was involved in a civil war for more than a decade. Between 1980 and 1992, the U.S.-backed government fought a brutal conflict against the leftist insurgency FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front). Approximately 75,000 people were killed and perhaps a million were displaced....
